Mr. Samir Mehta, Director

Mr. Samir Mehta, 61, is the Director of ₹ 45,000 Crore Torrent Group.

Under his leadership, Torrent Pharma took several strategic initiatives, including forays into new therapies and geographies, large investments in product development infrastructure and capabilities, building state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and acquisitions, thus establishing Torrent as one of India's fast growing and well respected Pharma majors. His emphasis on professional organisational design, precise execution and operational efficiencies has built a strong and globally competitive generic business platform in Torrent Pharma.

Samir Mehta has also guided the Group’s entry and growth in the Power sector. Torrent Power has systematically improved its performance on all efficiency parameters and ranks amongst the best run power utilities in the country. His emphasis on efficiency and reliability has led the Company to demonstrate exemplary operational capabilities and high customer orientation thus, setting new benchmarks in the sector and attracting many accolades.

In a move to expand its business presence, Samir Mehta mentored the Group’s entry in the emerging City Gas Distribution sector by participating in bidding rounds for new areas and acquiring existing CGD entities. In short span, Torrent Gas has developed robust infrastructure across all 17 Geographical Areas. Torrent Gas will continue to expand the infrastructure and will achieve the Investment plan of ₹ 10,000 Crores.

Much before the current emphasis on CSR, he always conducted the businesses in a socially responsible way, giving a new dimension to the traditional meaning of CSR. He has emphasized environmental responsibility in industrial operations and creation of local livelihoods in the influence areas of Torrent establishments. His belief that improving community health and school education of the underprivileged class are powerful instruments for social empowerment and upliftment, has driven much of the Group’s investments in CSR activities.

A fine blend of business acumen and cautious entrepreneurial optimism, Samir Mehta has positively influenced all aspects of the Group culture with his contemporary outlook and innovative ideas. Torrent Group has established a reputation for being employee-centric, and above all fair and humane in all its dealings.

Mr. Jinal Mehta, Director

Jinal Mehta, 42, has done his Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Sydney, Australia.

He is the Managing Director of Torrent Power and also oversees Torrent Gas. He has more than 17 years of experience across various facets of the energy sector – generation, transmission & distribution of power and trading & distribution of gas.

He started his career with Torrent Power’s Generation business and was involved during the project and operations phases of 1,530 MW SUGEN Mega Power Project. Subsequently, he was responsible for the implementation of Torrent Power’s 1,200 MW DGEN Mega Power Project. Thereafter, he took charge of the distribution business of Torrent Power in April, 2014 and led significant operational improvements in both the licensed and franchised distribution businesses, in terms of network modernisation, reduction in AT&C losses, improved customer services and timely regulatory approvals for recovery of costs. Under his leadership, Torrent Power has strengthened its leadership position in the Power Distribution business and distributes nearly 30 billion units of power per annum and caters to peak demand of approx. 5,300 MW to over 4.13 million customers across 12 cities.

Apart from conventional generation, transmission and distribution, his contribution in growing renewable capacity; both Solar and Wind Power, has resulted into renewable energy becoming a significant part of Torrent Power’s generation portfolio today with plans for significant further growth. The Company now has an aggregate installed generation capacity of ~4.3 GW, which consists largely of clean generation sources such as gas (2.7 GW) and renewables (~1.2 GW) and has another ~3 GW of renewable capacity and Pump Storage capacity of about 3 GW is under development

Jinal spotted the opportunity of India’s growing need for energy and led the Torrent Group’s foray into gas distribution in 2018. Torrent Gas (Revenues of Rs. 4,450 Crores) has the exclusive authorisation to distribute natural gas (for residential, commercial, industrial) and CNG (for vehicles) in 34 cities across India. Torrent Gas has already invested approx. Rs. 5,650 crores under Phase 1 of its capex program and has plans to invest an additional amount of Rs. 5,500 crores by 2030 to create a robust gas distribution network. Torrent’s authorised areas have a population of approximately 90 million+ people, which is about 7% of India’s total population.

Mr. Varun Mehta, Director

Varun Mehta, is a BSc (with honors) in Management from University of Warwick, UK and an MBA from INSEAD, France. He has worked across different business segments at Torrent Power including Renewables, Thermal Generation and Distribution.

He started his career in the Renewables business, where he made an important contribution in formulating the entry strategy of the Group in the area of renewable energy and setting up the initial set of renewable energy projects. Later when he moved to the Thermal Generation business, he spearheaded a strategic initiative on importing LNG directly from the international markets, making Torrent Power the first Indian power company to successfully do so. This initiative led to significant benefits for Torrent Power in terms of revenue enhancement and cost savings.

Under his leadership, Torrent’s distribution business has widened its lead over competition and strengthened its position as a benchmark utility. Some of his key contributions have been take-over of operations at Diu, Daman, Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Dholera and Mandal Bechraji and improving AT&C losses further. His efforts in the area of operational excellence led to Torrent Power being recognized as one of only 5 companies in the world to be simultaneously awarded the prestigious Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour from British Safety Council in 2021.

Currently, he is spearheading the Group’s foray into the Electricals, Diagnostics and Hospital business.

Mr. Aman Mehta, Director

Mr. Aman Mehta is a Bachelor of Economics from Boston University, Boston and an MBA from Columbia University, New York.

He has been Director at Torrent Pharma since August 2022 and heads the India and RoW Business. His key achievement has been the successful integration of the Unichem acquisition, which has created significant value for Company. Further he has lead several organic growth initiatives that has started delivering market share expansion, with a focus on new product launches and market expansion. Aman is a key contributor in evaluation of acquisition opportunities and driving the strategic direction of India business.

A firm believer in Torrent’s values and philosophies, he lays emphasis on creating a culture of innovation, empowerment and possess a commitment to creating a long-term sustainable business.

He serves inter alia as Director on the Board of Torrent Investments Limited, Holding Company of Torrent Group.

Ms. Dharmishta Raval, Independent Director

Dharmishta N. Raval, 69, is a Science graduate and master in Commercial Laws.She is an eminent lawyer and enrolled as an Advocate of the Gujarat Bar Association in 1980. She has worked extensively with late Mr. Kirit N. Raval, former Solicitor General of India. She has exposure in the matters of various laws, such as Service Laws, Banking Laws, Company Law, Labour Laws, Income Tax Laws and SEBI Laws. She has also worked as an Executive Director - Legal in SEBI till May, 2003 and thereafter she started her practice as an Advocate at Gujarat High Court.

She was a Senior Standing Counsel for the Central Government for the Gujarat High Court till June, 2004. She was a member of the High-Powered Advisory Committee of SEBI and is presently on the Mutual Fund Advisory Committee of SEBI. She is presently practising at the Gujarat High Court and at National Company Law Tribunal, Ahmedabad. She is empanelled as Panel Advocate with institutions like – UTI, SBI, SEBI, GPCB and IRDA.

Mr. Dhinal Shah, Independent Director

Dhinal Shah, 58, is a Practicing Advocate. He is also a Chartered Accountant by qualification. He has more than 30 years of experience in advising clients on taxation, exchange control, Insolvency and Corporate Laws.

He has been extensively involved in advising Indian corporate and multinationals on issues relating to double tax treaties (PE exposures, optimizing tax credits etc), due diligence, transfer pricing, foreign tax systems implications, corporate tax and accounting standards including IFRS, Insolvency Professional. He is a former Partner with EY.

He is an Executive Committee Member of International Fiscal Association. He was a Central Council Member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Director of IPA and RVO formed by ICAI, Chairman of Direct Tax Committee of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries and was Secretary of ITAT Bar Association, Ahmedabad. He is visiting faculty at IIM on Professional topics.

He has also addressed and presented papers at various seminars and conferences on international taxation, non-resident taxation, transfer pricing, domestic taxation, Accounting Standards, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, Valuation Standards etc. He is also a regular contributor of articles to Institute and other professional journals. He has also co-authored book.

Mr. Prakash Nayak, Independent Director

Prakash Nayak aged 61, Associate Member of ICSI, is a senior financial services professional with over 40 years of experience. He retired as Senior Executive Vice President – Group Corporate Relations at Kotak Mahindra Bank, where he was closely associated for 32 years, and continues to serve as a Consultant and Advisor.

He held leadership roles across Stock Broking, Life Insurance, Corporate and Investment Banking, and Group Wholesale Businesses, contributing extensively across Gujarat. Prior to Kotak, he worked with Gujarat Lease Finance Ltd., Vadodara Stock Exchange, and Anagram Finance Ltd. He has also served on key industry bodies and was awarded “Outstanding Manager of the Year” (2014) by the Ahmedabad Management Association.

Mr. Harnish Patel, Independent Director

Harnish Patel aged 69, is a Chartered Accountant having varied and rich experience in various field including Accounts, Finance, Taxation, Merger, Acquisitions, Commercial and Procurement. He retired from Torrent Power Limited in the year 2020. He was associated with the Torrent Group for more than 20 years. He has worked for Gujarat Lease Financing Limited and was also served as Director of Gujarat Lease Financing Limited.
